Physical sample collection triggers FL DBPR licensure — but licensed Ch. 489 contractors have an existing-scope exception.

  • 01Florida § 468.8411 defines "mold assessment" as including "physical sampling" — the DBPR and practitioners confirm that collecting spore trap samples requires a Mold Assessor (MRSA) license.
  • 02Sending samples to an AIHA-accredited third-party lab does not create an exemption from the collection-side requirement for unlicensed individuals.
  • 03Important exception: Florida-licensed contractors under Chapter 489 (general, building, specialty) may collect mold air samples as part of their existing licensed scope — they do NOT need a separate mold assessor credential.
  • 04Second exception: Licensed Florida home inspectors (Ch. 468, Part XV) may also collect samples within their existing scope.
  • 05If neither exception applies, the minimum credential is the Mold Assessor (MRSA) license: 32-hour course, ACAC exam, $230 application, $1M GL + E&O insurance.
  • 06The AIHA-accredited lab analyzing the samples operates under its own EMLAP accreditation — a separate framework from the FL DBPR assessor license.
